\"EvaEva Schlunke <\/a><\/strong>was born in Australia and grew up off the grid in the bush. \u00a0She has lived in Sydney, Australia and on the banks of the Tambopata River in southeast Peru. \u00a0We are featuring paintings she does which are inspired by her husband, the cartoonist Polyp.<\/p>\n

Eva writes: \u00a0Why do I paint? Because I enjoy doing it, mostly, but there are other reasons too. On a good day magical things happen. Some other force takes over and flows through me when it\u2019s working<\/em>. Somehow the painting communicates with me and I just know what to do without any thought or effort. I also enjoy a struggle when my painting is being difficult and refuses to talk to me. This is when I have to use my negotiating skills and try things to persuade the painting to come around and let me in again.\u00a0 And then there is the immense satisfaction I get out of knowing that a painting is finished, when there is nothing else I can do to improve it, when it speaks for itself and doesn\u2019t need me anymore.<\/p>\n

But it\u2019s not just for my own enjoyment.\u00a0 It\u2019s also because I need to get through the backlog of ideas that fill my head, tormenting me with their urgency and grumbling at me when I ignore them. Everyday inspires me with new moments to be captured. Some days scream at me louder than others, but there are always visual delights to be had, and I guess I\u2019m just greedy that I want to recreate so many of them and claim them as my own.<\/p>\n

Is my artwork self-indulgent and unprofitable?\u00a0 Probably, but I don\u2019t care.\u00a0 It gives me a reason to live, and it helps to remind me how beautiful and fascinating life can be when, at times, I can\u2019t see it so clearly for myself.
