The study \u2013 carried out by the World Bank, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and INTERPOL \u2013 reveals that much of the ransom money was used to fuel a wide range of criminal activities on a global scale.<\/p>\n<p>PIRACY remains a concern for ships passing the Horn of Africa, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.w-t-w.org\/en\/pirate-trails-tracking-the-illicit-financial-flows-from-piracy-off-the-horn-of-africa\/the-piracy-money-cycle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-12275\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-12275\" alt=\"The Piracy Money Cycle\" src=\"http:\/\/www.w-t-w.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/The-Piracy-Money-Cycle-131x300.jpg\" width=\"131\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.w-t-w.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/The-Piracy-Money-Cycle-131x300.jpg 131w, https:\/\/www.w-t-w.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/The-Piracy-Money-Cycle.jpg 170w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 131px) 100vw, 131px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\neven though the number of incidents has plummeted since 2011, when armed protection was beefed up on board many large vessels.
