{"id":16730,"date":"2014-04-30T22:52:11","date_gmt":"2014-04-30T20:52:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.w-t-w.org\/en\/?p=16730"},"modified":"2014-04-30T22:52:11","modified_gmt":"2014-04-30T20:52:11","slug":"progress-in-myanmar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.w-t-w.org\/en\/progress-in-myanmar\/","title":{"rendered":"Progress in Myanmar?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Baron Roy <a href=\"http:\/\/www.business-standard.com\/article\/opinion\/barun-roy-myanmar-logs-its-progress-114043001541_1.html\" target=\"_blank\">writes:<\/a>\u00a0 To protect the Irrawaddy Delta which was devastated by cyclone Nargis, the new government in Myanmar has banned the export of raw timber.\u00a0 Teak forests are in the north and the delta in the south, but they are in the same ecosystem.<br \/>\nUntil now Myanmar was the only country in the world that exported raw teak from natural forests rather than plantations. Most of it was done illegally by private loggers who enjoyed passive government support. Between 2000 and 2013, some 72 per cent of logs exported from the country was said to be illegally shipped. In some areas in the north, wide swathes of forests are being cleared to make room for oil palm and rubber plantations.
