Boskin discusses the future of the EU. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.w-t-w.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Whither-the-EU.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Whither the EU<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Many Europeans have come to believe that they have weathered the economic and financial storm. In the last two years, deficits and debt have stabilized. Yields on the sovereign debt of the eurozone periphery\u2019s weak economies have fallen sharply. Portugal and Ireland have exited their bailout programs. Talk of Greece leaving the euro has subsided.<\/p>\n<p>All of that is true, but there is a big catch: economic growth in the European Union remains anemic. GDP in Holland and Italy shrank in the last quarter, and France\u2019s barely budged. Forecasters are revising down their estimates for 2014 eurozone growth to just 1% year on year. Unemployment remains at a staggering 11.6% in the eurozone as a whole, compared to 10% in the United States at the worst of America\u2019s Great Recession. It is above 25% in Greece and Spain \u2013 and even higher among the young. Europe\u2019s economy remains shackled by three problems \u2013 sovereign debt, the euro, and wobbly banks.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.w-t-w.org\/en\/whither-the-eu\/banks-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-18518\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-18518\" src=\"http:\/\/www.w-t-w.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Banks-300x252.jpg\" alt=\"Banks\" width=\"300\" height=\"252\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.w-t-w.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Banks-300x252.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.w-t-w.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Banks-356x300.jpg 356w, https:\/\/www.w-t-w.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Banks.jpg 495w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Michael J.
