{"id":29307,"date":"2015-08-25T19:31:07","date_gmt":"2015-08-25T17:31:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.w-t-w.org\/en\/?p=29307"},"modified":"2015-08-27T07:54:57","modified_gmt":"2015-08-27T05:54:57","slug":"29307","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.w-t-w.org\/en\/29307\/","title":{"rendered":"Money in US Politics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Lisa Rein writes: T<span class=\"s1\">he world\u2019s largest defense contractor has agreed to pay $4.7 million to settle charges that it illegally used government money to lobby top federal officials to extend its contract to run one of the country\u2019s premier nuclear weapons labs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Over five years starting in 2009, top executives for Lockheed Martin \u2014 who were being paid by the federal government to run Sandia National Laboratories \u2014 ran a fierce campaign to lobby members of Congress and senior Obama administration officials for a seven-year extension of their contract, according to the settlement the Justice Department announced Friday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Lockheed executives, who hired a former New Mexico congresswoman to help them, didn\u2019t just press people with influence to re-hire them for a deal worth $2.4 billion a year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Mizer said the lab, a subsidiary of Lockheed, allegedly used federal money to lobby Congress and other federal officials from 2008 and 2012, \u201cto receive a non-competitive extension\u201d of its contract in violation of federal law.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The case opened a window on the inner workings of power and influence in Washington. It\u2019s not surprising that a big, politically connected defense contractor would lobby hard to keep a lucrative slice of federal business. But this case went further. It was taxpayers, not Lockheed\u2019s corporate lobbying arm in Bethesda, Md., who paid for the influence peddling.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">Excerpt from guidance that former New Mexico Republican Rep. Inspector General)<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">To clinch the contract extension, Sandia labs officials hired high-priced consultants \u2014 including a former congresswoman who was paid $226,000 \u2014 to write up a \u201ccontract extension strategy.\u201d Among the tactics suggested by Heather A. Wilson (R-N.M.) were \u201cworking key influencers\u201d by targeting then-Energy Secretary Steven Chu\u2019s staff, and even his family, friends and former colleagues at another federal lab, all with the goal of keeping Lockheed Martin in charge of Sandia in Albuquerque.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Wilson was not just on Lockheed\u2019s payroll.
