Claims of\u00a0resigned Ukraine\u2019s Economic Development Minister Aivaras Abromavicius about\u00a0corruption in\u00a0the government could indicate failure of\u00a0introduced reforms, International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Christine Lagarde said.<\/span><\/p>\n

“His [Abromavicius\u2019s] recently announced resignation is of\u00a0concern,” Lagarde stated. “If the allegations that he makes in\u00a0his resignation are correct, then it is obviously an indication that the anti-corruption measures that were committed to\u00a0by the government are not yet working.”<\/p>\n

Abromavicius\u00a0announced his plans to\u00a0resign\u00a0because he was unable to\u00a0work effectively. In his resignation letter, the minister named corruption and political pressure as\u00a0reasons for\u00a0the decision.<\/p>\n

Lagarde noted that Abromavicius conducted “good and solid reforms” in\u00a0Ukraine, and paid tribute to\u00a0his effort.<\/p>\n

“We have known all along\u00a0that in\u00a0relation to\u00a0corruption, a lot of\u00a0work needs to\u00a0be done,” she added.<\/p>\n

In March 2015, the IMF approved a four-year $17.5-billion assistance package to\u00a0Ukraine to\u00a0help the recovery of\u00a0its ailing economy. To receive the financial aid, Kiev has committed to\u00a0complex reforms, including enhanced anti-corruption policies.<\/p>\n
